JOST VAN DYKE got its name from a Dutch settler, and about 180 people live on this 4 square mile mountainous island. The island is known for its slow pace. Music and conversation is the norm and can be found at the beach cafes. Exploring the island on foot is easy, since Jost Van Dyke has some of the best hiking trails. Jost Van Dyke is the British Virgin Islands the way they used to be one hundred years ago. Jost (pronounced "Yost") Van Dyke, Green Cay, Sandy Cay and Sandy Spit, each offer spectacular beaches you must see and the snorkelling at Sandy Spit is excellent if the sea conditions permit. The island rises over the horizon like most of the other mini islands in the BVI. But this mini island is different. It rises over the horizon and presents you with one of the longest stretches of undisturbed white sand beach in the Caribbean.
Shopping
Shopping provides a break from beaches and bars. In Great Harbor, The famous Foxy's has a huge gift shop with lots of apparel and Cuban cigars.
Getting Around
Getting around on foot is easy. Theres definitly no need for cars on this island, unless you don't want to walk from one bar to another. At Great Harbor, there's a roadway that runs along the harbor, and all bars and cafe's are accesable from that.
White Bay is divided in two by a crop of rocks, use the beach to walk from bar to bar, but keep in mind that you have to cross the rocky divide.
